Hebrew Alphabet Facts

Modern Hebrew is called Ivrit.
Ivrit  is the language spoken in Israel and is based on Biblical Hebrew.
The Hebrew / Ivrit Alphabet is called Alef Bet.
There are 22 letters in the Hebrew / Ivrit Alef Bet.
There are 2 types of letters; Block Letters and Script / Cursive Letters.
We read and write from right to left.
The block letters are not capital letters! They are letters that are used for reading.
You will see block letters in the Bible, in books, in newspaper, on road signs etc.
It is important to learn the appearance and sound of Block letters, rather then knowing how to write them.  You will not use block letters for writing.  They are very square, have sharp lines and writing them is slow.
The cursive letters are used for writing, they are rounded and easy to write.
Each letter has a name and, typically, the quick sound that the letter makes, is the sound of the first letter of its name.
All the letters are consonants but 2 of the letters (Yud and Vav) are also used as vowels just like the letter Y is sometimes used as a vowel like in the word Baby.
4 letters (Bet, Kaf, Pey, Shin) has double sound; a strong sound and a weak sound just like the letter C has a strong sound in Cat and a weak sound in Nice.
5 letters (Kaf, Mem, Nun, Pey, Tadi) are written differently when they appear at the end of a word; they are called Final Letters.
